Day 46 - 79 miles from Liverpool to Little Falls, NY

Michael rode the Cervelo the 79 miles to Liverpool. The forecast had rain but it didn't occur until there was only about 25 miles left. So, although I got wet, it wasn't for the entire ride. The rain was light and the temperature was in the high 70's; so, all in all it was a good ride.

The northern portion of NY is pretty with lots of trees and greenery. Not flat and the closer we get to the Atlantic Ocean I understand we will do a lot more climbing than we have been doing since SD. We are currently at 404' and we will go over 6,500' before seeing the ocean. So far, all the ascents have been in the form of rolling hills which are not bad as long as you get a running start from a big descent.

One thing about NY is you can run into a lot of traffic and many traffic lights. So, you have to be attentive at all times when in or near a big city like Utica, Syracuse, etc.

Due to forecast of rain, I wanted to get as far down the road as possible before it started. So, I only stopped once on the road to take pictures. We did take a lot in Little Falls.

Little Falls is very old with buildings built around 1800. It has a population is only ~2,000. The Erie Canalway runs through Little Falls. In fact, the only reason Little Falls exists is because the Erie Canalway is so rocky, the boats had to be portaged around the rocks you can see them in a picture below. That is, they would lift the boat from the canal, place it on a carrier of some sort and roll it to where it could be placed back on the canalway. Little Falls has, of all the locks on the canalway, the one with the biggest drop of in elevation of 44'.

Here are the pictures from today...

This one was taken along the route. I thought is was pretty enough to stop!

Panoramic view at the same stop.

Masonic Temple built in 1901 and no longer a temple.

Main street of Little Falls.

Taken from Main street.

This building was built in 1835 I assume for some sort of manufacturing. Today, it houses an antique market Rach would die for. How do I know, we did a facetime and showed her a lot of the stuff they had. You can see some of it in the pictures later. We found some blue bottles she wanted for a florae and an old apron she can use in her business.

Here is Anne in front of some shops along the canalway.

The canalway.

People are living in these old buildings right on the canalway.

Notice how rocky the canalway is at this point and why they had to portage the boats around it.

Here we are getting directions.

Inside the antique market found inside of the 1835 building shown earlier and we are standing in front of in the picture above. Lots of stuff!

Cameras for Newt Colburn!

Ice cream and coffee area.

Tomorrow, we ride 74 miles to Latham, NY. Hope it is dry.
