The weather for the trip was wonderful. Cool and not a cloud in the sky. Due to the reflection of the sky off the distant water, makes the muddy water appear blue.
Then, all of us waited for the SS Badger to arrive and take us across Lake MI. While waiting, we met a person who is pedaling self-contained the 700 miles around the lake.
Standing in the middle of the picture with street clothes is a ride alumni who brought all of us bottled water, cheese, crackers and sausage to eat while we waited for the SS Badger. How nice of him.
The SS Badger is a large ship at 4,244 gross tons and 410' long x 51' wide. It is the only coal fired ship on the lake. It takes 4 hrs to cross and saves about 3 1/2 hrs of 7 1/2 hrs it takes to drive from Manitowoc, WI to Ludington, MI. Costs ~ $70 per passenger and vehicle. Bikes are only $6!
Preparing to disembark just after it arrived.
Here is how we stacked our bike below.
Vehicles go in here.
A view of Manitowoc, WI from the deck. Note the Navy submarine (in the middle of the picture) you can tour. There were 28 of these made in Manitowoc during WWII. After assembly, they were floated down the lake to Chicago, placed on barges and taken down the Mississippi River to the Gulf.
Anne is ready to go and we say goodbye to our 6th state, WI.
We see our 7th state, MI, in the distance.
The beautiful marina and harbor at Ludington, MI.
Getting ready to get our bikes and disembark. After 4 hrs, everyone is bored and ready to start pedaling!
We say hi to our 7th state, MI at the state line that is directly off the ship.
Since it is 7 when we arrive (we lost an hour due to EST), we ride quickly to our motel, eat and gp to bed as breakfast is at 5:30 am.
Tomorrow, I will ride the Cervelo the 114 miles to Mt Pleasant, MI.
