Day 39 - 87 (actually 100) miles from Birch Run to Port Huron, MI

Michael rode the Cervelo because we taking the Co-Motion into Canada tomorrow.

This was our last ride in MI; so, I can say MI by far wins the Best State Award for Riding Conditions: terrain - very flat, temperatures - all in the 60, 70 and 80's, good roads overall, always sunny, no rain and wind - either calm, side or tailwind.

The day started out interesting as I noticed four of our riders did not make a required turn. After making the turn and riding a bit, I decided to turn around go after and help them. I caught them about 2 1/2 miles down the road and brought them back on course. My good deed for the day and since the extra 5 miles put me at 92 miles and within range of a century, I just had to do it before finishing for the day.

Again, very few pictures taken during the ride; however, I did ride onto two horse drawn carriages of young Amish men on the road. I took these pictures from the bike. Both carriages had steel wheels. The one in back was much smaller than the front one. Altogether, both carriages carried about 10 young men and boys.

This is the front carriage. We all waved at each other. Note the beautiful sky.

Here is the lobby of our motel at Port Huron.

After Anne and I had good salads at Wendy's, we walked a mile to the lakefront of Lake Huron. So, the following pictures are what we saw. The entire area was very beautiful and the various colors of the waterway from pale green to very dark blue really added to the beauty of the area. There are pictures of the bridge that will take us to Canada tomorrow morning with a police escort.

That's right, every year, the Canadian police close one lane on the bridge and escort all the riders over the bridge that is over a mile long at 6,178'. At a specific point, we will stop and show our passports. One of our riders discovered her passport has expired; so, she had to go to Detroit to get it renewed. Another rider, for some reason, is circumventing Canada by riding along the US border and will meet us at Niagara Falls on the US side.

The ride into Canada is a major milestone of the trip as neither Anne nor I have been into Canada; nor, seen Niagara Falls that we will see this Saturday.

The way to the bridge into Canada that is less than a half mile from our motel.

The bridge is 6,178' long.

Memorial on the lakefront for 911.

Also on the lakefront.

John Martin, you never told us about the ship you lost.

Although, you still have the anchor!

John, Anne just wants to make sure you see this.

This gull was showing us a trick by standing on one leg. It really had two legs.

Anne and her new friends she met on the boardwalk.

Panoramic views at various locations along the boardwalk.

Look at these homes just across the street from the lake waterway.

Canadian ship heading out to Lake Huron.

Holding my sweetheart on the boardwalk. Notice the different shades of the water. Absolutely beautiful and reminded me of the Atlantic Ocean at Palm Beach.

These are of Lake Huron. Nice beach!

Tomorrow morning we head straight into Canada for an 82-mile ride to London, ONT. Hopefully, we will find two Canadian jerseys along the way.
